We’re hitting the ground running as 2017 approaches.  We have a number of new campaigns and updates on the way here at the Moorhead Library and we can’t wait to share them!

Maybe we’re biased, but we think libraries are pretty great.  And we want you to tell us why you think so too!  Why?  Because National Library Legislative Day is March 3rd, 2017, and while we have our representatives’ ears, we want them to know exactly how libraries impact their patrons and communities.  That’s where we need your help.

Libraries across Minnesota are providing postcards to patrons to record their library stories.  These postcards will then be shared with our legislators in March to showcase the library’s importance.  Help us continue to provide our community with great services and resources! It’s a simple way to support your library and have your voice heard directly by our representatives.  So, why do you love your library?

It sounds like a daunting task – reading 1000 books – but it’s actually quite simple and easily attainable with a little routine.  The idea behind our new early literacy initiative is to help parents make a commitment to ready their children to read and learn even before they begin school.  Multiple studies have shown that these children tend to not only be successful students, but successful adults as well.

So where to begin?  Register your child at the library and receive a welcome bag.  This will include everything you need to track your child’s reading.  Then pick out some books and read!  Make it a habit to ask your child every day, “What books have you read today?”  That’s it.

Signing up for this initiative includes pre-counted reading logs, tips, encouragement, and recommendations for reading with children via email, and invitations to special events to keep the fun going!

Hot Reads for Cold Nights

Hot Reads is here!  Win prizes just for reading – what better way to spend the winter than cozied up with a book?  Every four titles you read gets you an entry into weekly drawings – all you have to do is pick up a log sheet at the library, find some books to read, and record the titles as you read them.  Our reading program runs from the beginning of January through February.  Organize your to-read list and get reading!

It’s back!  One Book One Community – our annual intercity book discussion event – will return in the fall and we need suggestions!  Every year we ask the community to suggest a title they would like to read and discuss across the area.  The Fargo, West Fargo, and Moorhead Public libraries all participate, along with the colleges, and Moorhead Community education.  We’re looking for books and authors that represent the F-M area culturally, geographically, or in other ways too.  Make your suggestion at the library or you can do so online.

2017 is the year to get involved at the library!  And this is just the beginning!
